Description:
Abstract:
The book fills a significant gap in Greek academic literature by discussing current research on the study of human skeletal remains. It contains up-to-date references and original photographic material, making it suitable for students of biological and forensic anthropology and bioarchaeology. The book is divided into 12 chapters and 4 thematic sections. The first section (chapters 1-3) covers the basic macroscopic study of skeletal remains, including anatomical and histological terminology of the human skeleton, identification of fragmented and taphonomically altered bones, and methods for determining sex, age, and height with a critical evaluation of their theoretical background. The second section (chapters 4-6), includes issues of paleopathology and paleonutrition. It provides a comprehensive description of common pathologies found in human bones and teeth, and discusses the various microscopic, macroscopic, radiological, and biochemical techniques, employed in diagnosing diseases and reconstructing paleonutrition. The third section (chapters 7-8) addresses the biological history of prehistoric populations and the study of migrations of these groups, presenting the osteometric and anatomical methods used to investigate these research questions. Paleogenetics and ancient DNA are also covered, along with the advantages and limitations of these novel approaches. The fourth section (chapters 9-12) covers specific topics in taphonomy as they relate to archeology and forensic anthropology. A chapter devoted to the examination and study of mummified remains is also included. Additionally, field methods, database building, and fundamental statistical concepts for the analysis of osteological data are covered. Finally, the institutional framework and the bioethical concerns arising from the study of human remains are mentioned in the last chapter. This book aims to provide perspectives, opinions, and research examples while integrating useful knowledge for the study and identification of human skeletal remains by citing the most significant worldwide bibliography.
