Abstract: |
This chapter covers the excavations methods for skeletal material during archaeological research, including the suitable equipment and storage conditions. An overview of burial customs from antiquity to the present is provided, including mass burials, pit burials, cist graves and cremations, to better equip the field anthropologist for collecting skeletal material. The methods for recording skeletal material in situ and subsequently in the laboratory are also discussed. The quantitative and qualitative documentation of the skeletal material in inventory forms and the subsequent transmission of the data to databases for statistical processing are taken into consideration. Simultaneously, fundamental statistical concepts are introduced, particularly for handling anthropological data.
