Abstract: |
Height is a genetically determined feature, but whether one achieves its genetic potential depends on environmental factors. Along with the biological information, changes in height are of historical interest because they provide information about the living standards of populations. The chapter aims to present the different methods used to calculate height and body mass in osteological material of archaeological and forensic origin. Osteological measurements and regression equations for height estimation are discussed, along with the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. The significance of determining height and body mass in archeological populations is highlighted, both as a measure of population wellbeing and from an evolutionary perspective. Drawing on international literature, a thorough report is given on the secular trends in the evolution of height from prehistory to the present.
