Description:
Abstract:
This chapter aims to provide an overview of the pathological changes most frequently observed in skeletal remains of archaeological origin. The diseases are classified into broad categories, including neoplasms, trauma, metabolic, and degenerative disorders with references to each category's basic characteristics and clinical picture. In addition to epidemiological and differential diagnosis, each disease's history, evolution and geographic distribution are also covered. The frequency of particular diseases in ancient and modern populations is contrasted, and the degree to which past populations were able to adjust to particular conditions is highlighted. The evolutionary viewpoint that paleopathology brings to the study of human adaptability and evolution is given special attention. Rich photographic documentation of both microscopic and macroscopic paleopathological alterations is included in this chapter.
