Description:
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the institutional framework in several European states, the USA and Greece specifically for the research and documentation of osteological material. The chapter discusses a number of bioethical concerns pertaining to the examination and interpretation of human remains from an integrated archaeological, cultural, and evolutionary standpoint, because researchers have substantial ethical and moral responsibility when conducting this type of research. Access to the material, the development of non-invasive or minimally invasive technologies, and the necessity of a suitable working hypothesis with an adequate design in order to preserve the material for researchers in the future are some of the subjects examined. The issues related to the management and study of human skeletal collections, along with the media's role and ethical responsibilities regarding funding sources are discussed.
