Abstract: |
This book is a comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to the social, economic, and cultural history of Venice and the Venetian Empire. It covers the period from the 11th century, when the foundations of Venice's commercial and maritime development and colonial expansion were laid, to the 18th century, when the Venetian state was overthrown by Napoleon's troops. The book covers a wide geographical area, focusing on Venice, exploring the course of a medieval urban center that gradually evolved into a maritime imperial superpower, and on the other hand, on the formation of the Venetian Empire in the Italian hinterland, Dalmatia, and the Eastern Mediterranean. The aim of the book is to introduce students to the history of the Venetian State and familiarize them with the basic themes and fundamental interpretative tools that have renewed European historiography in recent decades, during which the history of Venice has been at the forefront of research interest. The textbook analyzes the economic and social structures and processes that made Venice a commercial superpower, while also addressing issues of everyday life, adopting perspectives drawn from cultural history, gender history, and identity theory. Using the Venetian example as a starting point, points of convergence and divergence between the metropolis and its possessions are identified in various aspects of social, economic, and cultural life. The final chapter aims to bridge the gap between the past and contemporary cultural production by studying narratives and representations of the Venetian past in cinema. The book fully covers courses on the history of the Venetian State, while it could also be used in courses on European, medieval, and modern history, as well as the history of modern Greece.
