Description:
Abstract:
This chapter explores the conditions that shaped Venetian economic hegemony and the city's role as a key commercial hub between Asia and Europe. It examines demographic trends and urbanization, the relationship between migration and the economy, and the early stages of commercial and maritime expansion, positioning Venice as a trading city within feudal Europe. The chapter analyzes Venetian dominance in the Mediterranean through commercial practices, legislation, and state policy, with particular attention to the financial sector and the Venetian Arsenal as an early example of large-scale industrial production. Economic strategies within the Stato da Mar are discussed, as well as the adaptations to the global economy of the early modern period. These include the loss of overseas trading bases, a shift toward land investment and manufacturing, and the increasing economic significance of the mainland. New sectors such as printing, silk production, and glassmaking are addressed, alongside the “aristocratization” of the ruling class. Finally, the chapter considers material culture—values, consumption patterns, and social behaviors—within this evolving economic landscape.
