Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter, the formation of the so-called “Venetian myth” will be presented, and its characteristics and ideological connotations will be examined from the late Middle Ages to the present. Topics include: Venice's uniqueness as an eco-historical system; the model Venetian polity characterized by stability, concord, justice, and democracy; Venice as a maritime power and the distinct nature of its imperial structure; the Venetian state as a paradigm of secularization; and the myths of “hedonistic” Venice. At the same time, the “counter-myth” of Venice—as a tyrannical and authoritarian regime—will also be analyzed, as it emerged in response to Venetian expansionist policies in the 15th century and reached its peak during the Enlightenment, when the Venetian Empire was already in a state of decline. Finally, an overview will be provided of the key themes and interpretations that have dominated international research and scholarship on the Venetian State from the 19th century to the present day.
