Description:
Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the stages of the formation of the Venetian state and the process of imperial expansion within the context of international competition for dominance in the Mediterranean. It explores Venice’s dependence on and gradual detachment from the Byzantine sphere of influence, and its transformation into a powerful economic force in the region. Attention is given to its penetration and consolidation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the formation of the Stato da Mar. Venice is examined as a maritime and commercial empire within a feudal world. The chapter also investigates the rivalries on the Italian peninsula and the redirection of Venetian expansionist policy toward the Italian mainland with the establishment of the Stato da Terra. Furthermore, it addresses the triangular imperial dynamics between Venetians, Ottomans, and Habsburgs, and the shifting balances and adaptations in the Mediterranean during the early modern period. Finally, the chapter reflects on 18th-century Venice as a medieval empire in a changing world, and on Venetian imperial ideologies—from commercial pragmatism to enlightened civilizing missions.
