Abstract: |
This chapter explores the formation of the political and social "body" within Venice and the Venetian Empire. It analyzes the tripartite social division: Patricians (nobili)—the distinctive merchant-nobility class, their privileges, political and social behavior, and gendered constructions of nobility; Citizens (cittadini)—their social composition, concepts of citizenship and local belonging, and their political aspirations; and the People (popolo)—including artisans, laborers, the poor, and migrants. The chapter investigates both vertical and horizontal bonds through popular confraternities and clientelist networks. It also addresses the legislative and executive powers, as well as the bureaucratic structure of the state, and examines how these were transferred and adapted across the imperial territories. Key themes include consent and dissent, political alliances, and forms of social organization. The complex and shifting relationship between the Venetian State and the Roman Catholic Church is also discussed. Further attention is given to state ideology and political culture, focusing on rituals of governance and authority in both the metropolis and the empire. Finally, the chapter reflects on the content and limitations of the so-called Venetian "democracy," and on the crisis and reformist demands that emerged during the eighteenth century.
