Abstract: |
This chapter examines the portrayal of Venice’s past through historical fiction films in global cinema. It explores the cinematic narration of the city via social representations, including social, gendered, and religious forms of otherness. The personification of Venice is analyzed through biographical films of both historical and fictional figures such as Giacomo Casanova, Veronica Franco, Giordano Bruno, and El Greco. The chapter considers the staged city: the use of set design and costuming in depicting everyday spaces and public activities. It correlates cinematic direction with Venice’s representation in global dramaturgy (e.g., Shakespeare). The use of the city’s architecture and topography in film is discussed, highlighting monuments, landmarks, and markers that form the core motifs of Venice’s cinematic iconography. Finally, the chapter addresses the filmic recycling of stereotypes portraying Venice as “mysterious, sensual, and dangerous.
