Description:
Abstract:
Adopting the perspective of historical anthropology, this chapter depicts the lives of elites and plebeians and the transformations in norms, practices, and perceptions in both the metropolis and the empire. It addresses the spectrum of survival and the materiality of life, including poverty, hardships, and diseases. The stages of life are examined through gendered and social expectations, as well as bodily perceptions. Gendered and social meanings of space and time are analyzed, focusing on parishes, neighborhoods, squares, and workplaces. Forms of socialization, the relationship between work and leisure, and the fluid boundaries between private and public life are explored. The concept of honor is discussed with its gendered and social connotations. Interpersonal violence, family organization, models and practices, and ecclesiastical and state interventions are considered. Communication practices emphasize the dominance of orality, including rumor, gossip, blasphemy, and slander. The limits of literacy and the diffusion of print culture are examined. Finally, the chapter addresses the Inquisition, criminal justice, and public morality, focusing on heresy, witchcraft, and sexual deviance.
