Description:
Abstract:
This chapter presents the large mass of plebeians (popolo) who, in the political and social perception of the elite, were often regarded as “foreigners.” It examines the relationship between the state, the Church, and the population within the context of the Counter-Reformation. The chapter explores bureaucracy and state policies of inclusion and exclusion, as well as the spatial organization of the city. It addresses poverty management through welfare and institutional policies in both the metropolis and the empire. The world of the plebeians is analyzed, including their neighborhoods and social networks, their claims and adaptability, and rituals of acceptance and contestation of political and religious orthodoxy. The carnival is discussed as a space marking the boundaries between elite and popular culture. Labor is considered in terms of both visible and invisible spheres, exploring the meaning and experience of work. Venice is portrayed as a dynamic metropolitan center with merchants, migrants, and intellectuals. Commercial establishments (fondachi) and connections with the empire via citizen confraternities are examined. The Greek Orthodox community—their character and activities—as well as the Jewish presence and the ghetto are also discussed.
