Abstract:
This academic book is an attempt to collect and present, in a didactic context, the knowledge and experience of the authors within the framework of their professional and research work, with the aim that it will reach the audiences of their academic courses in the field of Artful Learning and Teaching. The theme of the book focuses on the teaching and learning utilization of artworks and on the significant advantages of the aesthetic experience in the development of critically thinking citizens, who participate consciously and creatively in the educational and social reality of the 21st century. The book consists of two sections. In the first section, the role of Visual Arts in the Greek Curriculum of primary education is explored, the process of artworks’ critical “reading” in terms of visual literacy is described and relevant teaching strategies are suggested. Special reference is made to Harvard’s Project “Artful Thinking” approach and thinking routines. Also, selection criteria and copyright issues of artworks related to the presentation of reliable digital art and cultural repositories, are discussed. In addition, the educational utilization of Applied Arts to create an authentic learning framework is mentioned. Special emphasis is given on Digital Storytelling as a modern art form, which is a dynamically developing teaching approach with wide educational application. The first section is concluded by highlighting the value of works of art in building a culture of inclusion in the contemporary school. In the second section, selected examples of artful teaching practices and lesson plans in the form of exercises and activities are presented, so that they can be used in the practical part of the course. The exercises draw on strategies and teaching tools of the Artful Thinking approach and focus on the thematic units explored in the first section. Overall, the academic book is the culmination of the writing team’s long engagement with the subject of integrating Arts in teaching practice. As the team of authors has gained significant experience, the time has come to share their ideas with the educational, student and academic community.
