Abstract:
This chapter presents the educational approach "Artful Thinking" of the Project Zero Organization at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, which is a model of thoughtful observation and interpretation of works of art. The advantages of preschool and kindergarten children's contact with works of art are described in terms of overcoming the cognitive limitations involved in the functioning of their thinking at this age. Then, reference is made to the principles and methodological tools of "Artful Thinking". Particular emphasis is placed on research on the concept of thinking dispositions, which are a basic element of the approach that relate to the sensitivity of individuals to respond in a particular way of intellectual behavior to situations that stimulate creative and critical thinking. In particular, the palette of six (6) thinking dispositions is presented, explaining how their cultivation encourages students to act reflectively and interpretatively towards the visual symbols and subtle messages of works of art. Finally, the techniques for recording and revealing the reasoning process that develops as a result of the observation and relation of young students with the various aspects of the Visual Arts are described stressing on the way they contribute to the activation and cultivation of thinking within the learning process.
