Description:
Abstract:
This chapter explores the concept of inclusion in relation to the management of student diversity in the contemporary school. Teaching approaches relevant to inclusive education, which find context and implementation in primary education, are presented, in addition with the use of artworks as a supporting mechanism for building a culture of inclusion to face the challenges of responding to the complex dimensions of diversity reflected in school classrooms. Emphasis is given on the universal communication code of works of art, as approached in the light of the pedagogy of multiliteracies and different semiotic modes of meaning production. In addition, indicative artistic strategies of differentiated teaching, intercultural education and education of students with disabilities and special educational needs are suggested, as means of managing social exclusion and school marginalization. The chapter concludes with the presentation of the award-winning educational program "Filoxenos", which highlights the inclusive dimension of artworks in primary education classrooms.
