Description:
Abstract:
The book is addressed to undergraduate and postgraduate students who are taught or study topics of the long 18th century modern Greek literature or are interested in a comparative view of Greek and European literatures. It offers a presentation of modern Greek literary production, both original and translated, from the aftermath of the fall of Candia (1670) to the foundation of the Greek state (1830) in its historical and cultural context. Emphasis is placed to the Enlightenment movement, its main representatives (Voltaire, Rousseau, Mercier, etc.) and their influence on the shaping of modern Greek literature and thought (Voulgaris, Moisiodax, Katartzis, Korais, etc.). The literary production is studied in sections according to literary genre: poetry, narrative prose, theatre, newspapers and literary magazines, etc. The emerging aesthetic and poetic theories are reviewed, and the phases of the linguistic question are briefly presented. Each chapter is accompanied by the relevant bibliography.
