Description:
Abstract:
This chapter briefly presents the educational reforms and the renewal in the Greek educational curriculum due to the spread of Enlightenment ideas and economic development thanks to the Hellenism in the diaspora. Emphasis is placed to the role of Adamantios Korais and his circle. The maturation of the Enlightenment was linked to the increase in the Greek scholarly books (scientific, mainly educational) which occupied a place alongside the traditional, popular books. This development was marked by the emergence of new centers of Greek book production, notably Vienna, and the adoption of new practices in the system of publication, financing and distribution, mostly with the method of subscriptions.
