Abstract:
This introductory chapter offers a historical overview of the political, social, economic development of the cultural conditions of Hellenism during this long period. The Industrial Revolution in England and the French Revolution would change the face of Europe and the world. The scientific and technological progress is rapid, and the ideas of the Enlightenment are spread throughout Europe. The Hellenic world is for the most part under Ottoman rule, apart from Venetian rule in a few areas. The Greek population under Ottoman rule was subject to the milet of the Orthodox (the Roum milet) led by the Ecumenical Patriarch, who, apart from religious he also assumes administrative responsibilities. In the main Greek area, the Orthodox are organized into communities governed by elected Procrites (community leaders). The Phanariots penetrate the Ottoman administration and assume hegemony in the semi-autonomous principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. At the same time, the rise of the commercial class and the growth of the diasporic Hellenism take place (Venice, Vienna, Buda, Pest, Paris, etc.). These economic, social, political, and cultural developments in Europe and Greece will contribute to the formation of a strong national consciousness in the Greeks, which in turn will find its historical expression and justification in the Greek Revolution.
