Abstract: |
This chapter examines modern Greek rhetoric in its double manifestation, the rhetorical practice (speeches in Modern Greek, learned or vernacular) and the rhetorical theory (Modern Greek textbooks for learning rhetoric). Modern Greek rhetorical practice during the Ottoman period was primarily concerned with ecclesiastical preaching, which already from early 16th century turned to the adoption of a language simple for communicative purposes. The leading preachers in the second half of the Ottoman period were Frangiskos Skoufos, Ilias Miniatis, Cosmas the Aetolian and Nikiforos Theotokis. In the first two decades of the 19th century, in the context of the modern Greek Enlightenment, rhetoric began to develop.
with secular themes concerning the educational, cultural and political needs of the nation. In the section on modern Greek rhetorical theory, reference is made to textbooks that appeared from the late 17th and early 18th centuries and served educational needs of teaching rhetoric, secular and ecclesiastical. These textbooks reproduce the Aristotelian theory and the great legacy of rhetorical theory from antiquity and Byzantium. In the decade of 1810s rhetorical manuals were published that departed from the Aristotelian tradition to some extent, adopting new approaches of European origin to the analysis.
