Abstract:
This chapter describes and analyses the phenomenon of the gradual emergence of a critical discourse on literature. This discourse is traced in the search for a terminology for the newly created genres of prose fiction and, above all, for the 'novel', which begins in the environment of the first Mavrokordatos, continues in the Phanariot area and ends with the formulation of Korais' 'critical' theory and the proposal of the term 'mythistoria'. In the 1810s there is also an increase of works of Poetics (manuals consisting of rules for composing and judging poetic works). Such manuals, which drew on the European Belles-Lettres, are: 1) the Poetics incorporated in the ‘Encyclopaedia of Greek lessons’ (1812-1814) by Stefanos Kommitas, with material from the French writer on aesthetics Charles Batteux and of Aristotelian character, 2) the ‘Grammatica’ (1817) by Konstantinos Oikonomos, who used material from the Aristotelian Batteux as well as from Hugh Blair, who had a modern and romantic conception of literature; 3) the Poetics entitled ‘Kalliopi palinostoussa or on poetic method’ (1819) by Charisios Megdanis, which complied with the Phanariot aesthetics. At the same time, in the early 19th century, there appeared the first works of codification of modern Greek metrics. One can also detect an incipient modern Greek literary criticism in the periodicals of the time (mainly in ‘Ermis o Logios’), where a more aesthetic approach to literary texts is evident.
