Urban design in the era of the Anthropocene

Description:
Abstract:
The term “Anthropocene” is used with increased frequency to describe the new geological era in which we live. Since 2020, the anthropogenic mass on our planet has surpassed the natural mass. This new global condition influences cities and is influenced by urban development. Can our planet withstand the growing urbanization? Goal 11, “Sustainable Cities and Communities” of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations addresses this challenge. In the European Union, structural funding for cities emphasizes the need for sustainability and the environmental sector. To achieve urban sustainability, equitable use of resources, local-based development, bottom-up economic models, and climate mitigation and adaptation become priorities. The role of urban design, in order to serve sustainability, is to transform these abstract notions into physical interventions, to integrate these principles in day-to-day urban design, with a four-fold goal: 1) reducing fossil fuel consumption and subsequent greenhouse gases emissions, 2) liveable public spaces, 3) nature-based solutions, and 4) civic engagement and empowerment of the people.
