Basic principles for human-centered design of urban streets

Description:
Abstract:
Sustainable urban mobility combines the environmental, social, and economic parameters of mobility and constitutes a crucial pillar of European Union policies, as shown in the White Bible for mobility and in the promotion and guidelines for Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans. For a city at human scale, the design of mobility infrastructure needs to promote active mobility (walking, cycling), to restrain car usage, and to distribute the precious public space of city streets in a just and equitable manner for everyone. For liveable and, above all, safe streets, design must take into account the multifaceted function of the street, which extends beyond that of mobility: as a space for children’s play, for neighbors to meet, for group social activities etc. For this reason, the physical design of city streets is paramount in its importance: it defines the geometric attributes of the street, what percentage is given to each mode of mobility, whether curbside parking is allowed or not, as well as a street’s urban furniture, especially trees and vegetation. Pioneering examples of urban districts that promote life with less cars are presented, such as the Vauban area in Freiburg and the recent changes in Parisian streets. Strategies for promoting cycling are presented, alongside good practices for cycle infrastructure. Finally, special care should be given to the design of sidewalks: eight basic design principles are explained, which include the application of Universal Design, so that these valuable city spaces are accessible and safe for people of all ages and of different capacities.
