Authors: Sergaki, Panagiota
Reviewer: Klimi-Kaminari, Olympia
Description:
Abstract:
This chapter aims to analyze the basic principles and values under which cooperatives operate. Cooperatives are a particular form of enterprise that first highlight the human factor and the relationships between them and then follow the economic results. The values of cooperatives have led to the formulation of seven principles governing each cooperative and this chapter aims to highlight these principles and thus the specificity of cooperatives vis-à-vis other forms of enterprise. Particular attention is given to the contribution of democratic administration to the sustainability of the cooperative project. It examines in detail the importance of democratic governance in the way social enterprises are managed and controlled by their members, who are actively involved in policy-making and decision-making.
