Description:
Abstract:
This chapter attempts to assess the current situation in relation to the position of the Region and its role at national, European and international level. In particular, a) the existing situation is assessed in relation to international and national development axes, supranational and interregional functions, border zones, and comparison with other Greek regions; b) the position of the Region with the EU is assessed, taking into account various indicators of development and prosperity used, inter alia, for EU regional policy in the context of combating regional disparities; c) a more detailed assessment of the position of the Region is made, in the context of the European spatial system; d) the position of the Region is assessed at national level, and the geographic-residential relations and dependencies both inside and outside the Region are analysed. The comparison of the data leads to a number of conclusions about the performance of the Region in various areas such as education, research, the economy, employment and unemployment and, finally, the level of poverty.
