Abstract: |
Sorghum belongs to the cereal grains of warm climates and is a plant of great economic importance worldwide due to its new use as energy plant. The plant’s botanical characteristics and its biological cycle are directly related to its adaptability and good agricultural practice. This chapter includes a description of the root system, stem, leaves, inflorescences and kernel of the plant. Its developmental stages from germination to maturation are described in detail. Emphasis is placed on botanical characteristics related to the root system, stem, leaves, arrangement and parts of the inflorescence of the Poaceae family and particularly of the genus Sorghum. The differences between the main cultivated types of sorghum are described.
