Abstract:
This chapter elaborates on the concept of public participation in the decision-making processes. It first presents the historical development of the concept of participation and the key points of reference, which have contributed to the understanding of the role of participation by decision makers and its institutionalization in various fields of decision-making and various spatial scales. More specifically, initiatives undertaken both at the global and european level are presented, through which the importance of participation in coping with contemporary challenges is matured.
