The commons and democracy in our time

Description:
Abstract:
The final chapter explores the contemporary discourse on the commons and the prospects for constituting a “democracy of the commons” through the expansion and interconnection of existing forms of commons in our time. The commons refer to collectively shared goods — whether material, such as land, water, and air, or immaterial, such as knowledge and skills. They connect individuals through a network of social cooperation and interdependence and become objects of collective management. The logic of the commons is situated beyond the logic of the market, as well as that of private and public property. It fosters an economic activity based on need rather than profit, promoting equitable cooperation through horizontal and collective decision-making processes. The chapter examines the form of “freedom-in-common” that the commons make possible and investigates the potential for their collective management through new forms of political representation — ones that move beyond the familiar structures of governance found in modern democracies.
