Abstract: |
Chapter four examines representations of children in the media, science and art (literature, film, painting, etc.). In particular, we will look at how the various discourses that emerge around childhood through the media, science and art emerge not only as a privileged site for the representation of dominant conceptions around it, but also how they feed back, reproduce and in some cases undermine them through alternative representations. The media, science and the arts reproduce, reinforce and sometimes challenge dominant myths about childhood. Therefore, we will examine whether they consolidate a particular regime of truth regarding the definition, traits, specificities, needs and risks of childhood, as well as children's relationships with adults. In this light, the aim is to weaken the stereotypes surrounding childhood, and thus to change relations between children and adults.
