Abstract: |
This book aims to approach childhood in relation to a range of social, economic, political, and ideological factors in order to explore the structural characteristics that make childhood a social category and a stable element of social structure. The book is organized around three theoretical and methodological approaches: 1) historical sociology of childhood, 2) theories of socialization, 3) new sociology of childhood. Based on the theoretical and methodological principles of each approach, the consequences of each approach on the general view of childhood and on the social position of children are discussed. The main objective of the book is to move students away from the traditional interpretation of childhood based solely on age, while proposing an exploration of social identity and a social interpretation of the terms "child" and "childhood." The book falls mainly within the field of the sociology of childhood, but is also related to the cognitive subjects of the sociology of education, social theory, pedagogy, and childhood studies in general. It is also of interest to researchers and students in the field of cultural sociology. It can be used by academics, educators, those responsible for designing educational policy and curricula, childhood professionals, undergraduate and graduate students, and researchers.
