Abstract: |
This chapter analyzes the debt crisis as a public problem. Its aim is to address the fiscal debt crisis as a public issue, focusing on the public discourses — political, journalistic, and social — and the public controversies that lead to the problematization of the crisis. The fiscal debt crisis is presented as an unprecedented problem in Greece’s post-dictatorship period through a political strategy that shapes the problem’s framework, identifies its causes and responsibilities, and outlines the key components of its resolution. The chapter focuses on the characteristics the problem acquires through the invocation of a framework of emergency and critical conditions, the identification of the culprits in the previous government, and a dilemma-based framing that maximizes the sense of urgency. It also considers the interplay between national and global dynamics both in terms of the real causes of the crisis and its management, as well as the media’s compliance with governmental interpretations of the crisis. Furthermore, the chapter investigates the role of documentaries addressing the crisis, highlighting differences in the framing of the crisis and in the use of varying interpretive approaches regarding the causes and responsibilities for managing the problem.
