Description:
Abstract:
This book is intended for undergraduate and graduate students studying topics related to the emergence of public problems and the formation of the political agenda. The aim is to understand the processes through which public problems emerge by bringing together different research traditions in the fields of public policy, media sociology, political sociology of interest groups, and social movements. More specifically, it explores the processes through which only some of the events or issues that arise in the public sphere are framed as problems, publicized by the media and evaluated by experts, become part of political competition, and ultimately become the subject of political decisions and public policy development. In this context, it examines issues related to the actors involved in the negotiation of public problems (public actors, social movements, media), the ways they use to conceptualize or "frame" the problems, the rhetoric and the patterns of justification they use to highlight aspects of these problems, as well as the policy solutions that are ultimately chosen. At the same time, certain examples of processes of formation and development of public problems in Greece are examined, such as immigration, forest fires, food scandals, etc.
