Description:
Abstract:
This chapter aims to familiarize the reader with the traditional types of comparison: genetic comparison, which is based on direct or indirect contacts and influences, and typological comparison, which examines similarities and/or differences that arise based on analogies in the conditions of the works’ creation. In addition, it will present the five types of comparison which, according to Manfred Schmeling—one of the leading theorists in the field—constitute a fundamental methodological tool in any comparative literary approach. The chapter will then delve deeper into these concepts through examples of indicative comparative analyses (e.g., relations between Greek and German Romanticism, the reception of Nietzschean philosophy in the works of Greek and German authors, “writings” of memory, and more).
