Abstract: |
Within the framework that governs the entire book, this chapter analyzes the often invisible but, in some cases, decisive role of the global civil society and NGOs in shaping and producing global politics. Specifically, it examines not only how they act as pressure groups but also how they are increasingly active at the supranational level. Although their role is traditionally seen as limited in terms of conventional understandings of power, this chapter explores how the nature of global problems, as well as existing gaps in the structure of global governance, allow the global civil society and NGOs more space to take initiatives, form alliances, and exert pressure towards the provision of global public goods and the improvement of global governance.
