Description:
Abstract:
This textbook aims to provide students with an understanding of how politics is produced at the global level. To this end, the first part of the book (Chapters 1-2) examines the central concepts as well as the main theoretical approaches to global politics through a contemporary and critical perspective. With this background, the second part (Chapters 3-8) examines and analyses all categories of actors in global politics and their synergistic interaction. In particular, the contemporary role of the state, the expansion of its competences and the challenges it faces are examined, with a parallel discussion of regional integration and global governance structures, as well as non-state actors (businesses and NGOs), which in many cases are involved in shaping and decision-making. The aim of the book is to help students understand the complex processes through which different actors shape policy in the global system. Overall, the text seeks to move away from simplistic and single-factor considerations and to demonstrate the complexity of the processes and structures of global politics by increasing the categories of international actors and the multiple pathways through which they co-shape the global setting. It also attempts, in the same context, to demonstrate the transition from international to global politics and to frame traditional national interest issues in terms of the need to provide global public goods.
