Description:
Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the pivotal role of markets and corporations in global politics. The analysis takes place on two levels. First, based on the assumptions of Chapter 3, state policy is understood as the outcome of various economic and social interests, among which corporate actors hold a central position. Specifically, under the dominance of the neoliberal economic paradigm, their increased economic power confers upon them corresponding political power. Second, global corporations act as participants in international negotiations, cooperating and clashing both with national governments and within global economic organizations. Given that they represent the "forces behind the throne," a comprehensive analysis of global politics cannot be conducted without reference to their role.
