Description:
Abstract:
The purpose of this chapter is to present the main pillars of global economic governance. Specifically, it examines the three organizations of the Bretton Woods system—their role, significance, and evolution. In particular, these organizations are analyzed not only as forums where member states coordinate their economic policies, but also as actors that develop an independent dynamic that does not always align with the national preferences and objectives of their member states. Finally, the chapter also analyzes the role and growing importance of ad hoc intergovernmental organizations (e.g., G8/G20), which operate at the intergovernmental level and play a significant role in global economic policies on a case-by-case basis.
