Description:
Abstract:
The chapter discusses and analyzes both the dominant and alternative theoretical approaches to global politics. The axioms and working assumptions of the realist school constitute the necessary starting point. The evolution of thought within the realist school itself, as well as its framing by important assumptions from the liberal-neoliberal school, reflect the dynamic nature of the global arena and the corresponding need to develop multiple working hypotheses that can satisfactorily explain the range of issues in global politics. Towards this direction, beyond the central theoretical debate in the field of International Relations, it is essential to examine and analyze the main positions of the Marxist school, social constructivism, as well as the critical contributions of some alternative perspectives, such as feminism, postcolonialism, and ecology.
