Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 8 discusses possible connections that can be made between theatre and one of the most traditional approaches to science education: demonstrations. This trial is based on the assumption that demonstrations are a form of "performance" organized by the teacher to showcase a scientific idea, and their characteristics could potentially be enhanced with the intervention of theatre. The trials, with the presenter acting as both teacher and artist, have shown that demonstration performances tend to portray the experimenter as the "hero" and highlight ideas related to their abilities. Only approaches using techniques such as object theatre or black theatre seem to provide some elements of successful theatrical representation of scientific ideas from the experiment. The chapter concludes with proposals for script design exercises for presenting classic experiments.
