Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 7 describes the third experiment, which appears to succeed in both the learning of abstract scientific ideas and the development of theatrical skills. The hypothesis was: if Galileo's original text, Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, is used as the source of scientific ideas, there is an increased likelihood that students will actively engage in representing these scientific concepts, because a) the text, being dialogical, conflictual, and literary, is enjoyable for everyone to read, b) students' self-esteem is boosted, as they are reading and understanding an authentic scientific text for the first time in their lives, and c) Brecht's play Galileo builds bridges between theatre and science. The success, which distinguishes this particular experiment from the previous ones, lies in the stage of studying scientific ideas, where students are divided into “Aristotelians” and “Copernicans”, engage in conflicts, and learn.
