Description:
Abstract:
In Chapter 3, theoretical representations of a series of concepts/models in the physical sciences are presented, with emphasis on: a) characteristics that are not accessible to the senses and cannot be constructed empirically, b) characteristics that directly conflict with everyday culture (supported by spoken language), and c) the potential of these models to be visually represented and involved in narratives of the evolution of natural phenomena. Specifically, representations of concepts/models drawn from various stages of the historical evolution of the sciences will be presented, with an emphasis on the most fundamental and simultaneously abstract ones: light, shadow, the universe, absolute and relative space, linear time, causal, stochastic, and complex systems. Each representation will be accompanied by exercises in “translating” phrases from spoken language into scientific language and vice versa, constructing scientific narratives of phenomena in spoken language.
