Abstract: |
Chapter 2 presents the main physical properties of rocks, with emphasis on standardized laboratory tests used to determine them, their interrelationships, and their connection to the geological origin of the rock, along with explanations of key theoretical concepts. The chapter begins with the model of rock as a multiphase geological material, introducing relevant notations for the mass and volume of its components. Definitions of porosity, density, and water content are provided, along with the relationships between them, and common laboratory methods for their determination are described, based on Greek and international standards. The concept of rock durability against degradation is developed, and its importance for engineering applications is explained. This is followed by a discussion of the most significant thermal properties of rock, such as thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, and thermal diffusivity. At the end of the chapter, a list of bibliographic references is provided for readers seeking further study of rock physical properties. The chapter is complemented by exercises for practicing relevant calculations, as well as suggestions for hands-on experience in measuring physical properties in the laboratory.
