| Abstract: |
The chapter focuses on the definition of the translation phenomenon, both as a process and as an outcome of that process, and attempts to highlight its multiple dimensions. It examines the etymology of the terms traduction, translation and translation and how this has influenced the perception and conceptualisation of the act of translation in the Western world. The general characteristics of the translation phenomenon and the different types of translation are studied. Special emphasis is placed on the different types of interlanguage translation and the role of the translator in the translation process is defined. The different categories of translators and their tasks are also presented. Finally, the epistemological characteristics, objectives and structure of the discipline of translation studies as well as the evolution of translation studies thought are presented.
