Description:
Abstract:
This book is an Anthology of a neglected period (from the point of view of literature and indeed poetry), the Late Antiquity. It included specimens from the poetic output beginning with Oppian of Cilicia in the 2nd century AD until George of Pisidia c. AD 630 (but without him, as he is considered to be the first Byzantine poet). In other words, it covers the period from the end of 'classical' philology until the beginning of byzantine philology. In the Introduction the historical, religious, cultural and educational background is discussed, without the knowledge of which the comprehesion of literature at this period is impossible. Texts include specimens from all important genres cultivated at this period presented according to modern theory which is significantly different from what was established some twenty years ago. Texts will be followed by commentaries elucidating them from many different angles (see the analysis according to each chapter). The book continually focuses on contexts, on the interaction of literature and art, literature and science, literature and philosophy (Neoplatonism, theurgic and theoretical), literature and religion (the osmosis of Christianity and 'paganism').
