Abstract: |
The method of Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA), known in the international literature as DXA or DEXA (Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry), was initially developed for the measurement of bone minerals with the aim of early diagnosis and monitoring of osteoporosis. Now, DXA is also applied for determining soft tissue composition. This chapter consists of four parts. The first part analyzes the principles of the method, both in terms of the applied model and the absorption of X-rays by different tissues. The second part describes the basic characteristics of the DXA system, as well as the similar method of DPA (using gamma rays instead of X-rays) that is used alternatively. The third part discusses the reliability and accuracy of DXA, while the last part examines the use of the method in combination with other methods for using 3-, 4-, or 6-compartment models at the molecular level.
