Steel frames

Description:
Abstract:
Steel frames consist of elements that are relatively stiff, and connections that may range from slightly to highly rigid. By themselves, they form a discontinuous support system composed of rings spaced apart in such a way that they function independently. They can be used either for protection or for structural support. Steel frames are classified as heavy or light. Heavy frames are further divided into standard sections, trusses, and pinned frames. Light frames include sliding types, lightweight sections, corrugated sheets, grated structures, and ribbed elements. The type of frame installed during tunnel construction primarily depends on the prevailing geological conditions, the size of the opening, and the construction method used. The assembly is completed with additional components such as coverings, base supports, connectors, and wedging elements. Information is provided regarding the yielding behavior and load-bearing capacity of the frames. This is followed by design guidelines, application examples, and exercises for practice.
