Παρουσίαση του κινήματος του Νεοελληνικού Διαφωτισμού, των σχέσεών του με το ευρωπαϊκό κίνημα, των ιδιαιτεροτήτων του στην ελληνική του εκδοχή, των φάσεων διείσδυσης. Σύντομη αναφορά στους βασικούς του εκπροσώπους: Ευγένιο Βούλγαρη, Ιώσηπο Μοισιόδακα, Δημήτριο Καταρτζή, Αδαμάντιο Κοραή κ.α. Εγκυκλοπαιδισμός, ωφελιμισμός. Θέσεις και αντιθέσεις (αντιδιαφωτισμός). Το κεφάλαιο συμπεριλαμβάνει ανθολογημένα αποσπάσματα κειμένων.

This introductory chapter presents in broad strokes the movement of the modern Greek Enlightenment, which sets the tone for most of the examined period, focusing mainly on issues of education and ideas. Characteristic features are the shift towards European letters, secularism of knowledge, the attempt to break away from religion. Gradually the national consciousness is strengthened, which will be a key factor in the formulation of the demand for liberation from the Ottoman rule. The first phase, the signs of an early Enlightenment, can be traced in the Phanariot environment of the Danubian Principalities. The movement reached its maturity at the end of the 18th century. Prominent representatives are Eugenios Voulgaris, Dimitrios Katartzis and Iossipos Moissiodax; the Encyclopaedism and the French Revolution have a major impact. The Greek Enlightenment reached its culmination in the two pre-revolutionary decades; in that the contribution of Korais was important. The reception of the Enlightenment and the new ideas was not unhindered: serious opposition from conservatives and church circles was recorded in the 1790s and the years 1819-1821.
