Abstract: |
The transition from garden art to “landscape architecture” took place during the 18th century within the framework of new landscape theories developing in England at the time. The prevailing demand was the investigation of the characteristics of the natural place, yet with the goal of identifying regularities and utilizing them in a synthetic manner, primarily with reference to painting. This demand, despite its ultimate controlling intent, was closer to recognizing the value of natural qualities than previous landscape theories. Thus, the landscape conception of the 18th century represents a shift from the emphatic application of visual control to an appreciation of nature, and it occurred within the context of the development of Empiricism and the Enlightenment. This theoretical framework also explains the explicit connection of English landscape architecture with the development of modern European urban polities, as well as its relation to Classicism and the ancient Greek landscape.
