Description:
Abstract:
Alternative fuels, also known as non-conventional and advanced fuels are fuels derived from sources other than petroleum. Most are produced domestically, reducing our dependence on imported oil, and some are derived from renewable sources. One of the main type of alternative fuels, are biofuels, fuels derived from organic sources such as biomass and organic waste. Biofuels research and development has led us to three different generations of biofuels. Each generation has a unique feedstock and its own potential benefits and draw backs. The different types of biomass, the conversion processes and their products (fuels and/or chemical compounds of high added value) are described briefly but comprehensively in a relatively simple way, understandable by chemistry, chemical engineering and related sciences students. Τhe aim of this chapter is to connect the renewable raw materials, and specifically biomass, with the principles and philosophy of "Green Chemistry" and sustainable development.
