In chapter 2 several basic concepts of statistics which are commonly used in Spatial analysis are introduced. The four scales of measurement are explained, according to the type of data, as well as the distinction between primary and secondary data. Concerning primary data collection, the basic principles of questionnaire design are presented, including the basic types of questions. In addition, the concept of the sampling frame is explained and several sampling methods are developed, using different sampling frames such as lists or maps (spatial sampling). Finally, the calculation of the sample size is discussed.
